Late March 2009 Update

3/29/09 What a beautiful day! Dennis and I are continuing a somewhat local, although not 100% local diet. Our goal was 75% local for this year. I think we might be slightly below that, but not as low as 50%. For example, this morning we ate rice and eggs for breakfast. The rice certainly wasn't local, but the eggs, cheese and butter were. Last night's squash soup was about 90% local.

Winter and local food

It's pretty cold tonight (8 degrees now). Some people in other places might say that's REALLY cold, but in northern Minnesota in December it's normal.
This weekend we cooked most of the remaining garden tomatoes into a thick spaghetti sauce and ate them over fettuccine noodles. It seems amazing that we have local garden tomatoes this late! There are a few small-but-sturdy tomatoes left. They're on the kitchen window sill. When they're gone we'll switch to canned.
